The Varia di Palmi is one of the most significant religious festivals in Calabria, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site in 2013. Celebrated on the last Sunday of August, it is dedicated to Maria Santissima della Sacra Lettera, the patron saint of the city. The fascinating Varia di Palmi procession features a massive 15-meter-tall 'votive float' carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the town streets. The circular route begins and ends at the Chiesa di San Rocco, passing through Corso Garibaldi, Piazza della Libertà, and Via Nazionale, with a stop at the Convento di San Francesco. Introduced from nearby Messina in 1582 following a plague, the Varia represents the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, brought to life by hundreds of participants. Perched at the top of the structure is the 'Animella,' a young girl representing the Madonna—a figure rich in religious and anthropological significance. Other children are attached to the structure as angels, while the apostles and the 'portatori' (bearers) stand at the base. Visit Palmi (RC) during the Varia procession and discover the stunning artistic and natural beauty of the surrounding area.
